What's the difference between a community, a circle, and an alpine club?

Search "find hiking partners" and three terms come up: mountain community, hiking circle, and alpine club. They sound alike but serve different purposes.

The three at a glance—

  • Mountain community: a loose online connection. Information exchange via apps or social media, typically free.
  • Hiking circle: a regular group of like-minded hikers. Often regional, university- or workplace-based, meeting 1–2 times a month. Membership fees usually apply.
  • Alpine club: a traditional organization that teaches serious mountaineering — rock, snow, gully climbing. Entry exams, dues, and gear preparation are required.

YAMATOMO offers both mountain community and hiking circle functionality in a single app. Joining and leaving is free, with no barriers to entry.

How to create your own community or circle

Can't find a group that matches your pace? Create one. It takes three steps.

  1. 1

STEP 1: Define your purpose and theme

    Clarify your target — e.g., "Kanto-only day hikes" or "beginner-friendly women's circle."

  2. 2

STEP 2: Create the community in the app

From the Community tab, tap Create. Set a name, description, and cover image — done in about a minute.

  3. 3

STEP 3: Recruit members and plan your hikes

Use the community's chat and event features to share schedules and meeting points.
