Mountain List

100 Famous Mountains of Japan

100 peaks

Selected by writer-mountaineer Kyūya Fukada in 1964 in his essay collection *Nihon Hyakumeizan*, this list of 100 representative peaks spans the country from Mt. Rishiri in Hokkaidō to Miyanoura-dake on Yakushima. It mixes truly alpine summits — Fuji, Kita-dake, Yari, Tsurugi — with familiar lower mountains like Tsukuba, Daibosatsu and Amagi.

Fukada's criteria were "character, history and individuality," and most chosen peaks rise above 1,500 m, though stature is not the only test. For generations of Japanese hikers, completing all hundred is a lifetime project — and this page brings together elevation, prefecture, difficulty and community info for each summit in one place.
